Burra Burra mine in South Australia is one of the world's famous Azurite producing localities, but generally in relation to specimens collected during the 19th century and seen in old museum collections. Started in 1845, the mine worked a very extensive zone of supergene (oxidized) copper ore through opencast operations. The earliest phase of mining 1845 to 1877 produced the highest ore grades (700,000 tons, averaging 7 % Cu) from copper carbonate ores (Azurite and Malachite). Some more modern material was collected during the 1970s and 1980s but at significantly lower ore grades. This fine miniature specimen is really intensely coloured and displays particularly well-formed sharp Azurite crystals. It comes from David Hardman's collection, assembled from the 1960s onwards.
