The tin and copper mines in the Camborne-Redruth mining district in Cornwall are famous for many fine mineral specimens, one of which is the iron carbonate, Siderite. It was not an ore mineral, but gangue, however it occurred in very fine crystals of a quite distinctive form. This nice large miniature specimen is quite rich in Siderite crystals and characteristic of that area, with pseudo-octahedral dark brown, resinous crystals, many displaying triangular stepped crystal faces. These crystals line cavities with Quartz-Hematite veinstone and although there is some damage to these Siderite crystals it is classic and very collectible material. Individually the crystals reach 7 mm across, but they are aggregated, with no individual isolated crystals. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection (no. MS 2004.081) and previously traded by Dr F.
