This Apatite (probably Fluorapatite) from the famous exposures at Megiliggar Rocks on the coast near Tremeare, Breage, Cornwall is an exceptional colour. Unfortunately, the glassy purple crystal is incomplete, but it is still remarkable and was collected by and in the collection of Nick Talbott who many will remember died way too young. His wonderful neat handwritten label (no. 703) records that he found it on the 8 November 1980. The crystal sits alongside a well-formed 3 cm tall Orthoclase crystal which is itself partially coated in Muscovite mica (recorded as Gilbertite). Nick probably possessed the finest suite of pegmatite minerals from Megiliggar Rocks and this, despite its flaws, is a significant piece with superb colour. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 2004.069.
