This fine smooth and very tactile specimen of "Blister Copper" - an unusual botryoidal variety of Chalcopyrite - is from the historically important Cook's Kitchen mine, near Camborne in Cornwall. Philip Rashleigh's famous 18th to early 19th century mineral collection preserved at the Royal Cornwall Museum contains several examples of this variety of Chalcopyrite from Cook's Kitchen mine, most of which he acquired in the 1780s. This lovely dense miniature specimen consists of a 1.5 cm thick layer of massive to banded Chalcopyrite terminated with a smooth brassy layer of "Blister Copper" Chalcopyrite. The specimen is undoubtedly very old but its earliest accompanying label is a Richard (Dick) Barstow green stock label from his St. Just premises, dating to the early 1970s.
