This really unusual form of Native Silver is from the prolific New Nevada mine in the Andres del Rio District, Chihuahua, Mexico. This silver mine was made famous during the 1980s for its exceptional herringbone sprays of crystallized Native Silver embedded within Calcite, and etched out to produce spectacular, and sometimes large displays. Rarer than these were spinel-twinned elongated spear-like crystals. This magnificent miniature specimen displays two 2.2 cm long spear-shaped Native Silver crystals rising up dramatically from Calcite matrix. This is a most unusual form of Native Silver and is possibly a reflection of repeated twinning along its length, although this is unclear at its surface. Very few specimens of this form were found within the 1980s discoveries: classic dendritic, or herring-bone forms being prevalent. It is from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
