Malachite
If you are looking for an impressive 'statement' sized specimen to grab attention then this Malachite from the famous L'Etoile du Congo (Star of Congo) mine in the Katanga Copper Crescent, DR Congo might be just up your street. Started in 1907 (under a different name) the mine is still active today. Renowned for amazing Malachite specimens this hefty stalactite is certainly one of the more impressive pieces to have been found there. Measuring 21 cm in length and with a diameter approaching 4 cm this is a significant Malachite stalactite by any measure. With support, this specimen would look fine displayed upright, or at a shallow angle using the natural globular/botryoidal concretions splaying out from one side. The stalactite, and side appendages, are solid, compact, dense Malachite, meaning that the whole specimen weighs in at 1.3 kg. The surfaces of the stalactite are quite rough, with a very deep green colour with a lustre varying between matt and sparkling, almost like glitter. Internally, in cross-section through its base, the radiating concentric form showing how the stalactite grew, layer by layer can be seen. There is only minor scuffing to the surface which is remarkable given its size and weight. An extremely fine, large, and dramatic Malachite stalactite, sure to raise discussion on display in a collection.
