Tucson, Arizona, USAIf you are looking for an impressive 'statement' sized specimen to grab attention then this Malachite from the famous L'Etoile du Congo (Star of Congo) mine in the Katanga Copper Crescent, DR Congo might be just up your street. Started in 1907 (under a different name) the mine is still active today. Renowned for amazing Malachite specimens this 6.8 kg aggregate of chunky stalactites is certainly one of the more impressive pieces to have been found there. Comprising several very thick stalactites - the largest measuring 21 cm in length and with a diameter of 4.5 cm - this is a significant Malachite stalactite by any measure. Larger still, behind this main stalactite, is an even wider, 5.5 cm diameter bulging one. This specimen oozes character: big, bold, brash and colourful. At the top of the taller 'rear' stalactite an unusual pointed 'tip' is present, adding to the detail. Self-supporting in dramatic upright pose, this specimen looks stunning. The stalactites are solid, compact, dense Malachite, hence why it weighs so much. The surfaces of the stalactites are quite rough, crystallized, with a very deep green colour and with a lustre varying between matt and sparkling, almost like glitter. Internally, in cross-section through its base, the radiating concentric form showing how the stalactite grew, layer by layer can be seen. There is some scuffing to the surface which is to be expected given its size and weight, but for the price this is a remarkable display. A fine, large, and dramatic Malachite, full of character. Due to its weight additional postage charges will apply.
