Franklinite, a rare zinc iron oxide - the zinc analogue of Magnetite - was first discovered at Franklin Furnace in ores derived from several neighbouring mines in Sussex County, New Jersey. Like Magnetite, it forms black octahedral crystals, but unlike Magnetite, good crystals have never been found anywhere else making those from the Franklin Mining District highly sought after. This miniature specimen bears a significant crystal of Franklinite, not only for its sheer size (3 cm corner to corner), but great shape - as a lovely pyramid with the other side of the octahedron buried within the matrix of Calcite and more Franklinite. There is some minor chipping to the corners, but this is still a very important Franklinite crystal. Ex David Hardman collection.
