Tucson, Arizona, USAA highly significant specimen of terrestrial Native Iron from the famous remote Siberian occurrence in the Khungtukun Massif, Taimyr Peninsula, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. Most natural Native Iron is found in meteorites and is identifiable due to the characteristically elevated levels of nickel and other iron-nickel compounds associated with extraterrestrial bodies. However, the Native Iron from Khungtukun Massif formed through the emplacement of igneous rocks into iron-bearing carbon-rich rocks (Coal Measures) thus burning the coal and melting iron-bearing rocks in the absence of oxygen to form Native Iron metal. Most specimens from Khungtukun Massif are small (<8 cm in size), but at 11.5 cm in length this is a major piece. It is also extremely rich in Native Iron, rather than small sparse blebs in basalt matrix. It has one cut surface and just a small amount of rusting. Ex David Hardman collection whose collecting started in the 1960s.
