Description
Liroconite needs little introduction, it is simply such an iconic rare and beautiful Cornish mineral species. It has been reported from a few other places worldwide, but nothing compares to the stunning specimens discovered in Cornwall during the peak of copper mining in the very latest years to the 18th century and on into the 19th. Once, all the great mineral collectors of Britain and Europe vied to obtain crystallized specimens of this exotic new substance which was found richly crystallized in a series of small mines around the village of St. day. These mines: Huel Mutterel, Huel Gorland, Huel Unity and Huel Providence, all gradually merged as they expanded along the same vein system, making the exact source of specimens within these mines difficult to determine, but most simply get labelled as Wheal Gorland. This very rich miniature specimen is richly invested in quite large (up to 4.5 mm across) and well-formed wedge-shaped and bipyramidal Liroconite crystals in gossan. The Liroconite crystals are an eye-catching blue-green to green colour, but the crystals are not gemmy and are in places quite ragged as they have been naturally etched in their geological past. In fact, during this process, some of the Liroconite crystals has been coated in a glossy green crust, possibly of Cornubite, or Chrysocolla. Nevertheless, for richness and standout colour, this is a superb miniature Liroconite. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 2001.012.
