Cornwall is renowned for having produced some of the world's finest crystallized specimens of Bornite - a mineral normally associated with massive pinkish to purple metallic lumps. This large miniature specimen from the famous Redruth mining district features many scattered well crystallized aggregates of Bornite in shattered vein Quartz. The Bornite crystals display sharp crystal faces, a fine bluish-grey colour and metallic patina. The individual aggregates reach 4 to 5 mm in diameter and are very prominent across the front of the specimen. Under magnification some of the crystals are seen to be damaged but many show superb crystal form, including in a small cavity on the back of the specimen, cylinder-like elongated hexagonal prisms of Chalcocite pseudomorphed by Bornite. A fine example of Cornish Bornite crystals. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 2015.012 and ex Cowan collection.
