What a stunning, large, impactful Tsumeb azurite! This is a large, very thick, colorful and dramatic crystal with deep azure blue color and areas of electric-blue similar to Milpillas azurites. This substantial crystal is nearly four inches tall and over two inches wide! The luster is superb, the edges sharp and it has a very well defined termination! It is mostly one crystal, but the front face shows numerous, thin, elongate azurite crystals in tight parallel to near parallel growth giving the impression of striations. It is partially contacted on the back but has only trivial damage given the large size. Interestingly, on the back there are also two hemispheres of rich green malachite measuring 1.5 and 2 cm across, respectively. A partial azurite crystal penetrates the front of the piece and is 2 cm long, but otherwise this is basically a tall blue "column" of imposing size and impact. Crystals like this were always very rare and, even though there was a flood of azurite from Mexico on the modern markets, specimens like this from the old classic locality have held their own because they are so unique and different from anything that came out of the huge Mexican finds of the 2000s. This is one of those fine old styles that has not been matched by anything modern. This is most likely from the 1960s but it could be even older. The robust crystal size combined with the nice color is just amazing!
