This is an important specimen from the well known Roughton Gill Mine in the UK for the size, color, quality, and locality all. The locality and it's minerals are reviewed in "Minerals of the English Lake District: Caldbeck Fells" by Cooper and Stanley (1990); and in our own book on the Lindsay Greenbank Collection (available from the Mineralogical Record bookstore). This remarkable cabinet piece is an ancient specimen that is, miraculously, up to modern display standards for large minerals. It is exceptional for the locality and brimming with hundreds of lustrous, bright, almost neon, green Pyromorphite crystals from 3 mm and 1.2 cm in size and average just under a centimeter. Most of the piece is covered in these colorful crystals as open clusters, tight divergent groups and some large, mostly isolated, prismatic singles. Pyromorphite nearly covers the entire piece from front to back! It is notable not only for the size, but for the quality, luster, and rich color of the crystals and was certainly recovered in the early to mid-1800s, making this piece even more significant. The piece is nearly pristine all around with the exception of a small contact area on the rear near the top and isn't noticeable as it is all Pyromorphite there. Very minor contacting at the peripheral base to the Calcite. This is certainly one of the finest known surviving Pyromorphite form this important locality. It comes with a custom base for vertical mount, and is from the Desautels-winning showcase of the Brent Lockhart collection.
