Do you remember when the Mineralogical Record's special issue on Yukon Phosphates first came out? Unbelievably it was the July-August issue in 1992. Where does time go? This iconic issue introduced many collectors, including me, to Yukon phosphates, one of which was Gormanite, an iron phosphate. This terrific small cabinet specimen is from one of its two co-type localities, Big Fish River in the Dawson mining district of Yukon. The other type locality is that of Rapid Creek, in the same district. The surface of a rusty brown ironstone matrix is covered with excellent gemmy, toffee orange rhombic Siderite crystals. Over these, rich clusters of dark bluish green Gormanite crystals mask a good to one third to one half of the face. Despite their delicacy, the acicular crystals are undamaged and provide a first-class example of this quite rare phosphate.
