Tucson, Arizona, USAThis fine example of Almandine Garnet is from the Sudbury District in Ontario, Canada and displays an almost 2 cm wide, well formed odecahedral crystal with distinct faces in a mottled grey matrix. The Sudbury District is famous for it production of nickel, but contains other important economic elements such a s cobalt, gold, copper, silver and platinum-group metals. The District is extensive, covering a polymetallic deposit which is hosted in a large impact crater some 250 km in diameter. This was one of the largest impacts from space to ever hit the Earth. As the photograph shows, the Almandine crystal is mainly opaque with just a little translucency around its outer margins, yet is a good and characteristic example from this major deposit.
