Fluorite with Calcite and Chalcopyrite
This small cabinet specimen from Ozark-Mahoning mine at Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, USA is a corner section of a relatively large Fluorite cube, the longest edge of which is at least 7.4 cm in length. Dominantly amber-yellow in colour, the colour intensifies internally to being almost opaque, but with a translucent to transparent appearance in the outer sections. The Fluorite crystal is crowded internally around its external edges with small, 1 to 2 mm, Chalcopyrite crystals. This outer, 3 mm wide zone, is also a different colour - grey. Small, gemmy, 2 to 3 mm long scalenohedral Calcite crystals coat the central part of the Fluorite faces providing added character. This might only be part of a crystal, but it is classic Cave-in-Rock and full of interesting detail like the colour zoning, rich inclusions and Calcite overgrowth. Ex Arvid Pasto collection no. 1803.
