Roughton Gill mine in the Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria, England is known the world over for it's Pyromorphite specimens. For those interested in it's history and wanting to know more about the diverse mineralogy found there you can do no better than to read Mick Cooper and Chris Stanley's book on the Caldbeck Fells, published in 1990. The spectacular finds of Pyromorphite were made at Roughton Gill mine between about 1840 and 1890 and most of the best specimens were handled by the father and son mineral dealers Bryce Wright senior and junior. Although good specimens could still be found on the mine dumps during the 20th century none of them really compare to the old-timers collected underground when the mine was operating. This large cabinet specimen is a wonderful example. It bears the classic lime-green tapered crystals with sought after waxy lustre. The crystals cover virtually the entire display surface upon a matrix of sugary white Quartz which was well known at the mine. The Pyromorphite crystals are not the largest that you will see from the mine but are a really good size and their form is easily visible on display. High quality, large, display specimens like this are rare from this mine and much sought after by collectors of classic British minerals.
