A huge, and heavy, spectacular display specimen of botryoidal Hematite from Park mines near Askam. One large rounded botryoid forms the centre of this specimen like a giant eyeball. The outer layers of compact fibrous Hematite look like they have been peeled away like layers of an onion to reveal the spherical core. The base is flat, providing a solid position for display. A remarkable example of high-grade iron ore from the most productive iron-mining district within Britain. This specimen weighs in at over 16 kg and therefore additional postage charges may be required. An old handwritten label is preserved with the specimen, recording its provenance to the Park mines. In 1900, the Park, Stank and Yarlside group of mines were the biggest producers of iron ore aside from the mighty Hodbarrow mine.
