This whale-back shaped cabinet-sized Fluorite from West Pasture mine near Stanhope, Weardale presents the classic pale apple-green to gooseberry colour crystals for which this locality became famous during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The intensity of colour is really exceptional and many of the crystals display lovely gemmy corners and edges, but there is notable damage to some of the crystals. The 'rear' side of the specimen shows considerable natural etching of the Fluorite crystals, and the crystals tends to be slightly smaller in size the the main display face where they are gemmier and larger, with less etching. The crystals reach 2.1 cm on edge, but average nearer to 1.5 cm. The matrix is a robust piece of dark grey limestone matrix coated with a thin layer of Sphalerite followed, on one side, with Galena and then the whole coated in coarse cubic Fluorite crystals. This is a fine West Pasture mine Fluorite, maintaining its distinctive much loved colour. Ex George Farr collection.
