Fluorite from the La Barre mine, Saint-Jacques-d'Ambur, Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France is known the world over for its amazing colour zoning. This thumbnail specimen displays staggering zonation from amber, purple, blue and colourless, accentuated by the stepped shape of the crystal. The rear of the crystal shows significant damage, but the main front face of the Fluorite is lovely and glassy, with just the lower corner missing and one small chip on one edge. The front is dominated by an amber centre surrounded by a purple band and outer colourless zone. From the sides the purple layer appears much bluer. A small area of bladed Baryte crosses through the back and side of the crystal. A small, but dramatic Fluorite.
Editor's note
French fluorite is valued for it's amazing color zoning - look at how the cubes are yellow in the middle, then have a purple and finally a white rim. This happened because natural conditions changed dramatically while the fluorite crystal was forming and the outer layers formed different color from the inner ones. This specimen is an affordable example of French color zoning and a great fit for a European or worldwide fluorite collection.New Collector GuideEarthWonders Editor
