This fine example of 'leaf' Native Silver is from the Eisleben area in Mansfeld Basin, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Historically, this form of Native Silver was known to occur occasionally within the low-grade copper-bearing slates and shales in the copper mines. These mines were active during the early years of the 20th century and often employed child labour - something that during that time was commonplace around the world. Specimens of this form of silver from this region are rarely seen for sale and most date to pre-1920. The thin sheet of Native Silver in this specimen extends 8.5 x 4 cm from a small piece of dark shale matrix. The Native Silver has a lovely pinkish-gold tarnish, or patina. An orange printed number label (no. 1256) from a previous collector is attached to the specimen along with a handwritten descriptive label with the species and locality written in German.
