A lovely Caldbeck Fells classic. This miniature specimen is from an exposure of the Roughton Gill South Vein high up on Iron Crag at the head of Roughton Gill. We know this because of the accompanying labels, including one from J. George Wilson, but this assemblage is so distinctive that specialists would know this even without the labels. So, to the detail: the Pyromorphite is the classic bright lime-green colour, and the crystals, seed-like prismatic clusters of tapering, almost acicular crystals. These features are almost distinctive enough, but then there is the association with dark grey, to black, stalactitic manganese oxides. The manganese oxides rarely get mentioned, and are not recorded on the earlier labels, but I have had the fortunate to analyse these in the past and they are predominantly Romanècheite, a barium manganese oxide. A very nice miniature specimen and a distinctive Caldbeck Fells classic, from one of the lesser known outcrops. Of course, mineral collecting in the Caldbeck Fells was banned from about the year 2000 onwards, but this specimen predates this by some considerable time.
