Azurite
This large, blocky Azurite crystal may be simple in both habit and colour, yet its chunky proportions and intensely dark indigo blue surfaces all add up to a captivating specimen. Yes, you’ve guessed, it’s from the Tsumeb mine in northern Namibia and, adding that little bit of aesthetic contrast, are patches of granular, light salmon pink Dolomite. The Tsumeb orebody is hosted in ancient limestones and dolomites which have undergone around 500 million years of structural deformation, dissolution and mineralisation, in a carbonate-rich, karstic environment. Azurite, a copper carbonate, is one of Tsumeb’s most famous minerals because of its world-class specimens. This square, almost cubic crystal is of such intense blue it appears almost as black, or certainly very deep navy blue. The crystal as a whole is opaque, but the near-surface shell is translucent and at many points along the prism’s edges, hints and flashes of electric azure blue are present. It’s a thing of beauty which will look stunning in any display of fine Tsumeb minerals.
