Green Monster Mountain on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, USA is widely regarding as having produced the world's second best Epidote crystals, after Knappenwand in Austria, but in reality they are both very different. Indeed, how many Knappenwand specimens reach this size? This cabinet-sized display specimen is a remarkable example of the dramatic scale of the Green Monster Mountain crystals and just how bright and glossy they can be. The defining feature of Epidote crystals from Green Monster Mountain is their chunky, stocky shape, but it is also the combination of dark bottle-green colour, mirror-like prism faces and broad flat pinacoid terminations displaying chevroned growth patterns that really set them apart from any other world occurrence. The crystals on this specimen reach over 3 cm in length and simply exude quality. This classic locality, is host to over twenty mineral species, but is most famous among collectors for its world-class Epidote crystals. Epidote is of course a calcium aluminium iron sorosilicate and at the Green Monster Mountain locality occur in a skarn. Skarns are metamorphic deposits, usually rich in calcium-magnesium-iron-manganese-aluminium silicate minerals. This is a significant crystallized Epidote on a world scale.
