Fluorite
Sometimes nature really surprises me. The Collada mine in Asturias, northern Spain has produced some stunning Fluorite crystals, both in terms of their size and beauty. Colourful, complex, and sometimes large, the Fluorite crystals are a dream to behold. This huge detached individual crystal, reaches 10 cm on edge! Not only that, but it displays the iconic crystal form of Fluorite from Collada mine. Characteristic chamfered edges contrast against the smoother, glassier, interior of the cube. The edges are not as dark purple as many La Collada Fluorites, but when backlit the internal faces appear slightly paler in colour, but only around the periphery. Inside, the cube is translucent , with a dark purple 'phantom' cube. The overall cube is not complete, it is partial on the reverse from where it was detached from matrix, but the main crystal faces, corners, and edges are superb. The lowermost edge displayed in the photo is not straight partly because the crystal has grown narrower at one end. Internally, the crystal is translucent, rather than transparent, and looks absolutely amazing when backlit, with an dark internal 'phantom' cube. Additionally, the surface of the cubic faces display a stepped pattern. This specimen specifically comes from the 75 Level on Josefa-Veneros vein and dates back to an early find. A remarkably large, and beautiful, show-stopping Fluorite.
