Prehnite
Loanhead quarry is perhaps not that well known internationally but was for a long time a favourite destination of British mineral collectors, certainly during the 1980s and 90s and very likely before this. Loanhead quarry is situated just north of Beith and to the southwest of Glasgow. The quarry’s management team maintained an excellent relationship with collectors, so through many years of access, plenty of fine specimens were recovered. Gently undulating, botryoidal mounds of yellowish, light apple-green Prehnite up to 2.5 cm diameter cover a mid-grey basalt matrix. A little Calcite is also present with the Prehnite and basalt. Prehnite crystal faces cover the surfaces with an outer transparency graduating to an internal translucency. The colour is a zesty, sharp apple green and all crystals display a bright glassy lustre. This small cabinet specimen comes with a Mike Brooke Mineral Collection label and was formerly in the Dr J. Gordon Todd Collection, acquired (probably self-collected) in 1992.
