Tucson, Arizona, USAThis very large miniature specimen shows that gemmy, intense emerald green Dioptase crystals are not the preserve of Tsumeb mine, but are to be found elsewhere in Africa too. This Dioptase is from the Mindouli District in Pool Department, Republic of Congo and is associated with the very rare lead copper chromate arsenate hydroxide Fornacite. Comprising a relatively pure mass of Dioptase a single, long cavity, running almost the entire length of the specimen is lined with perfectly formed glassy emerald green Dioptase crystals individually to 0.9 cm in length. Murky green Fornacite occurs as sparse rosetted aggregates (to several mm) upon the Dioptase crystals and as more widespread intergrowths with massive Dioptase in the matrix alongside the cavity. Ex Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) collection. This is an attractive Dioptase from a less well-known occurrence, but equally of interest to rare species enthusiasts.
