This beautifully crystallized Andradite from Serifos Island, Greece is far from gemmy, but it is the crystal form that is important here. Comprising a triangular matrix of amphibole upon which is a thick layer of dark brown, matt Andradite crystals, the highlight of this small cabinet specimen is a 17 mm diameter crystal showing a rhombic dodecahedral form with tetrahedral distortion. The other Andradite crystals are well-formed, but not quite so 3-dimensional. Tucked between some of the garnets is a small 'iron-rose' rosette of Specular Hematite 6 mm in diameter.
