Tucson, Arizona, USAThese oversize Magnetite crystals are appropriately from an over-size iron ore mine, the enormous open-pit currently measuring 12 km long (yes, 12 km!) and up to about 3.5 km at its widest point. That is one big quarry! Named the Kovdor Zheleznyi mine, it is within the Kovdor Massif of the Kola Peninsula in the Northern Region, Russia. The Kola Peninsula is the large land mass to the east of northern Finland. This superb cabinet specimen displays numerous Magnetite crystals, the largest and best-developed measuring 3.5 cm on edge and about 4 cm high. This and many of the smaller crystals form octahedral crystals, with some edges modified to the dodecahedron, so producing some aesthetic chamfered edges. All the Magnetite crystals are opaque black with a bright metallic lustre and are distributed over a granular Quartz matrix with a pale cream to apricot surface layer.
