This substantial (8 cm long and 1.2 cm wide) wire of Native Silver is from the historically important Jáchymov (St. Joachimsthal) in Krušné Hory Mts (Erzgebirge), Karlovy Vary, Bohemia, Czech Republic, where prospecting for silver first took place in 1510. A town sprung up around the mines that opened, and by 1600 approximately 350 tons of silver metal had been mined. Interest in the geological complexity of the deposits, known as a five-element type because of the silver-cobalt-nickel-bismuth-uranium - led to over fifty (50) new species being described from the area - that is more than most countries! This Native Silver specimen is remarkable in its size and its significance to this historic silver mining region should not be under estimated. Looking in detail it is full of character, with several parallel wires, or strands, to it and a superb historic tarnish. There are very few specimens of this calibre in private hands. From the remarkable collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
