Quartz ps. after Scheelite
Ramsley mine, situated approximately midway between Okehampton and Whiddon Down, produced over 3700 tons of copper ore yet to the collector it is famous for its pseudomorphs of Quartz after Scheelite. For those not too familiar with the mining geography of Devon, close by, just to the west are other well known localities such as Sticklepath, Belstone and Meldon. This large thumbnail is a fairly large example of such a pseudomorph, comprising of two penetrating octahedral crystals, each measuring 2 cm on edge. The Quartz varies between translucent and opaque and has an off-white, powdery-textured surface coating. On the underside of the specimen where both octahedra are cleaved, a smaller area of micro-crystallised Quartz is present.
