Classic, instantly recognizable Herodsfoot mine material. This quite large specimen features one of the classic Herodsfoot mine mineral assemblages. Well-crystallized white vein Quartz is liberally coated in crystals of cubo-octahedral Galena along with golden, tetrahedral, Chalcopyrite-coated 'Tetrahedrite' crystals. This material was discovered at Herodsfoot mine at the same time as the famous cog-wheel Bournonite crystals (c. 1858). We should note here that due to the restructuring and renaming of the Tetrahedrite Group of minerals by the IMA in 2023, the Herodsfoot mine crystals should technically be labelled as "Tetrahedrite Subgroup" until detailed analytical data on these crystals is studied, but all collectors know them as Tetrahedrite and so we are sticking with that one here. The Chalcopyrite-coated Tetrahedrite crystals are fairly large (up to 1.1 cm across) with good shape, albeit with natural rounded edges and sometimes partially obscured by the Galena crystals. There is some damage present, mainly to the complex aggregates of Galena crystals, but this is still a fine and large old-time Cornish classic which really doesn't need a label to tell you where it is from. Having said that, it comes with a group of old collection labels including those from J. L. White and Mike Brooke.
