Sri Lanka is renowned the world over for its gem minerals - in particular Sapphire. Most of the gems come from the Ratnapura District but precise provenancing is difficult because of the way they are mined by artisanal miners and sold at market centres such as the town of Ratnapura. This two-part set comprises a beautiful pale blue faceted oval cut gem Sapphire measuring 5 mm across and a 3.3 cm long, uncut, colourless, gemmy, doubly-terminated Sapphire crystal. The Sapphire crystal is the classic lozenge shape, tapering at both ends and with wonderful detail to the stepped crystal faces. Flashes of blue can be seen internally, which is a feature often seen in Sri Lankan Sapphires. The terminations are incomplete, not through damage but natural growth, but it remains that this is a very large example of this beautiful stepped crystallized form of Corundum, var. Sapphire from Sri Lanka.
