Tucson, Arizona, USAThe Copper Queen mine at Bisbee in Arizona, USA requires no introduction. The massive copper deposit was discovered in 1877, its setting being that of irregular, metasomatic replacement carbonate ore bodies in limestone, whose mineralisation was controlled by dikes, sills and localised faulting. This lovely small cabinet specimen displays lustrous rich azure blue Azurite crystals covering a characteristic iron-rich, rusty altered limestone, with occasional patches of bright emerald green Malachite. The latter forms small silky radial clusters, seen to advantage around the specimen's edges. Th Azurite forms translucent to slightly transparent sparkling prisms to about 0.8 cm on edge. The specimen is accompanied with an old label, printed 'Mineralog. Institut. Universit't Wien. (Nr. 1359)', written in fabulous copperplate handwriting, plus a typed label from the same institute, numbered A 2292.
