Scheelite
Mount Xuebaoding (translating to Snowy Treasure Peak) is a mountain near the easternmost edge of the Tibetan Plateau in China. It sits within the Min Mountains and is the second highest peak at an impressive 5,443 metres (17,858 ft). The locality for this Scheelite specimen was for a long time reported as the larger of the two mountains, Mt. Xuebaoding, but is actually the smaller of the two, hence “Little”. The addition of “Little” must be a westernized version for surely this would be written in Chinese. A magnificent group of Scheelite crystals sit on a light grey matrix of what appears to be a solid block of silver grey Muscovite. The largest crystal measures 5 cm on edge and all are of a sumptuous, orange golden syrup, principally translucent yet containing occasional gemmy zones. A smaller, complete octahedral crystal is 2 cm on edge. All the Scheelite crystals have a brilliant glassy lustre. Under SWUV they fluoresce a bright yet muddy white while in LWUV they do not fluoresce. A spectacular Scheelite from Mount Little Xuebaoding and a splendid example of the species. Scheelite is a calcium tungstate.
