Sophia mine, in the Böckelsbach valley of south western Germany, produced arsenic, cobalt, nickel, silver and uranium until it eventually closed in 1939. During its life, 96 mineral species were recorded of which it is type locality to six. This small cabinet specimen is an excellent example of arborescent Native Silver which displays perfectly against a matrix of massive Calcite mixed with a little pinkish Baryte. The Native Silver forms a branching, three-dimensional cluster of crystals resembling a pine tree of tarnished blackened metallic silver which contrasts well against the creamy white matrix. The Sophia mine is located in Wittichen mining district near the village of Schenkenzell, in the Freiburg Region of Baden-Württemberg. Specimens from here are seldom seen in the European collections we buy, making this crystallised Native Silver a standout piece.
