Old Kilpatrick is a famous district for minerals, situated just north of the River Clyde and to the north west of Glasgow. This entire area is associated with the Tertiary Volcanic Province of western Scotland and is type locality to Thomsonite-Ca. This small cabinet specimen's 5.5 x 3 cm display surface is covered with pale apple green botryoidal hillocks of Prehnite, averaging 7 to 10 mm in diameter. Where these botryoidal mounds are sectioned around the specimen's edges, the internal radial structure is visible, adding to the interest of the specimen. Indicated by a glued on paper pointer, two thirds down one side and within the massive Prehnite matrix, is a small, 2 x 4 mm patch of glassy, tangerine orange Greenockite. Although rare and not so easy to obtain, Greenockite, cadmium sulphide (CdS) is widely distributed in this region and its type locality is only 21 km due west of Old Kilpatrick, within the Bishopton railway tunnel beside the town of Greenock. This fascinating specimen is accompanied with an old Wilh. Anderberg (Stockholm) label.
