Baia Sprie, Maramureș County in Romania is one of the most important mining regions in the whole for Europe - with mining said to have been carried out continuously from the Middle Ages until the early years of the 21st century. Baryte is a common constituent of the veins and many fine specimens have been recovered, but generally in smaller crystals and of variable quality. This 10 cm long tabular Baryte crystal is remarkable not just for its size, but excellent shape and it has a fine resinous to glassy lustre rarely seen at Baia Sprie. There is some minor bruising along the top edge, but this does not overly distract from how impressive it is. A fine display Baryte from Romania.
