Schorl Tourmaline from Woolley Farm is a favourite amongst collectors of British minerals and this superb crystal, pitted with tiny Fluorapatite crystals, ticks many boxes from this enigmatic locality. Woolley Farm holds a mystique in the mineral world. We know exactly where the farm is, because it still exists today, together with the various buildings which were there when the discovery was made in around 1815. But just exactly where the locality was discovered remains an unsolved puzzle which many people over the years have tried to resolve. It is said the discovery was made while digging a pond, presumably as a source of drinking water for cattle or a general supply for the farm. Woolley Farm lies to the north of Bovey Tracey in Devon and overlies the Dartmoor Granite. The excavation must have unearthed a shallow pegmatite pocket filled with Schorl, Fluorapatite, Quartz and minor Baryte and Siderite. This choice small cabinet specimens displays a 5.2 x 3.5 x 3.5 cm Schorl crystal with most faces fully intact, some smooth and lustrous, some rough and matt. The top and back faces are studded with sub-millimetre colourless to white Fluorapatite crystals, a much-desired associated mineral at this locality. This crystal, and a much smaller one, sit on top of a mass of black Schorl within a matrix of pink, iron-stained granular Quartz, rather than the more common red granite.
