Classic Parkside mine Baryte displaying the typical cream colour and elongated prismatic form - but doubled, as two parallel aligned crystals. The crystals, which are free from matrix, reach an impressive 11.5 cm in length making for a fine display specimen. There is some minor abrasion to the terminations, but this is not significant. Parkside mine is situated near to the village of Frizington in west Cumbria and is part of the West Cumbrian iron mining district. The mine commenced in 1855 and closed in 1925 but that is only part of the story. In between these dates the mine took over the running of other local mines including Crossgill mine and one of the Dalmellington pits. Similar prismatic crystals are well-known from Parkside mine, but they are usually much shorter in length. This fine specimen came from the Martin and Michael Gunther collection full of worldwide classics.
