Notice the color, shape, and strange metallic shimmer/sheen to the surface of this sharp gem species crystal. We purchased this specimen as an unusual garnet from a single pocket of new material that came out in summer 2023; but it had such an odd shape that, curious, Monica in our office did an RI (refractive index) test on this and discovered it was tourmaline (see here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C4hOGh4uP1V/). The test is definitive, and there is no mistaking the tools of the gemstone trade here. So, we have instead a VERY unusual tourmaline! Having seen nothing quite like this for color and crystal habit, we can only guess by the color that it might be some form of dravite tourmaline, as we have seen such colors in dravite. Without further analysis, we can not say which member of the tourmaline group it may be - but it is certainly not a garnet! I now wish I had bought more, but this was the best miniature I saw from the discovery and we are glad to have it.
