Powellite on Apophyllite

Two large, blocky "ice cubes" of apophyllite, smack dab in the center of this specimen, are ringed by a formation of honey-colored powellite, almost like a lion's mane. Some of the crystals seem to be doubly-terminated, and to 3 cm tip to tip. This is a choice small cabinet, with multiple different display angles, and even now, I find myself wondering if it should be displayed vertically instead of horizontally (that is OK! the best specimens are those we love from different views!). One of the finest in the parcel we acquired, and a personal favorite. Under UV lighting, the powellite glows a fierce yellow. Powellite, an end-member of the powellite-scheelite series of minerals, is quite uncommon in large, display quality specimens. This example of gemmy, amber-orange colored powellite with a very unusual shape and association is an excellent example of the species. Generally, powellite is found with scolecite or calcite, but this summer 2020 find produced powellite in association with apophyllite instead, so the association as well as the style is unusual.
