This is an exceptional single Ruby crystal with deep color and nice zoning, from a recent discovery of mostly lapidary material in India. My source saved us this one nice crystal. The lustrous display face shows a deep red, 3 mm thick rim that transitions quickly into concentric, sub-millimeter-thick, red-pink zones all the way to the core that is absolutely mesmerizing! Backlighting shows that the thick red zone is of this little beauty is very gemmy while the interior is translucent. The remainder of the crystal has a roughish exterior that is mottled, but when you put it under UV light the entire crystal just "pops" and fluoresces a bright red! This intriguing gem variety of Corundum has a mass of 6.3 grams. Super sharp, and quite rare from India! Most rubies we see from India on the mineral market are from Mysore (or Mysuru), a city in India's southwestern Karnataka state. This is something else, a new and interesting find!
