This is a significant, and surprisingly large, crystal of Chondrodite from the old Tilly Foster iron mine. It was a relatively large iron ore (magnetite) deposit discovered in 1810 and closed in 1897 after after 13 miners were killed in a rockslide. Specimens today are obviously hard to come by and there are collectors dedicated to acquiring collecting Tilly Foster material. This well-formed, elongate crystal is 2.4 cm long, and has excellent deep brown color with a satin luster. The crystal is complete and is perched aesthetically on a white and peach colored matrix making for great contrast. This is a large and significant crystal for the locality. A very old classic! Ex. Herb Obodda. It has a black on white numbering of 12040 on one side, which looks like an old number from the AMNH museum.
