This is a very rich, and surprisingly colorful specimen of Covellite from the classic old mining area in Colorado. Summitville, Colorado along with Butte, Montana and the ancient locality in Sardinia are the world's greatest Covellite locales. Good specimens in the small cabinet size range though are few and far between. Covellites from Colorado have a reputation as being the ugly duckling compared to Butte material but not this one, with its incredible flashy multi-hued blue iridescence. The piece has crystals to over an inch, and very good 3-dimensional relief which is also unusual for the locale. Although, as with most Covellites from all of these three major localities, there is some damage here and there, but it is certainly acceptable in the overall context for the size and quality. I regard this as one of the better Colorado examples I have seen in this size range.
