Porous black lava block on which several grey crystals of anorthoclase (potassium-rich albite) have formed. The main crystal presents a Carlsbad twin. This specimen was collected by volcanologist Haroun Tazieff in 1974, two years after the last eruption of this volcano, begun in 1972, and still ongoing, making it the most active volcano in Antarctica. Mount Erebus has been an active stratovolcano for about 1.3 million years. Subject to the polar climate, its average temperature varies between -50 ° C in winter and -20 ° C in summer.
