Gwindels are only able to be collected in Switzerland by hand during a few months of the year when alpine conditions allow for collecting. The work is hard, but there is a deep love and sense of adventure among the Strahler community finding these alpine treasures. It has always been a great hope of mine to someday be able to visit Switzerland and collect these alpine quartz specimens. This particular smoky gwindel is of good size, and although smoky has nice transparency. The word “gwindel” is derived from the german "gewunden" which means twisted or helical. By definition to be termed a gwindel the quartz crystal must show a twist in its structure. Hence the term for these specimens is twisted quartz.
