Peru Rhodochrosite is unique and distinct from the shapes and styles found in Colorado or South Africa. This is a particular Peruvian oddity we believe from finds in the 1980s. The specimen features a rich pink, translucent and somewhat distorted, 2.5 cm rhombohedral crystal with dramatic stepped growth and it is associated with several other, smaller, vivid pink Rhodochrosite crystals. The Rhodo crystals are intergrown with several very fine Quartz crystals of similar size and the cluster of Rhodochrosite crystals are nestled in a pocket of frozen Quartz points, smothered by the rhodo on top. So, essentially, it is a portion of a multigenerational pocket, in which Rhodo and Quartz together formed atop an earlier layer of Quartz. This vien produced some amazing combinations, but sadly much was lost before modern years and the rise in value of minerals and mineral preservation efforts here. This piece was long in the collection of Dr. Bill Logan who built a large and comprehensive Rhodochrosite collection of over 400 specimens and it comes with his label.
