Classic old Russian malachite specimen showing lustrous light bluish green botryoidal malachite across the top of this matrix. In excellent condition. The Gumeshevskii Mine, located near Polevskoy in the Sverdlovsk Oblast of Russia, is a historic copper deposit celebrated as one of the oldest and most important mining sites in the Ural Mountains. Geologically, it is a contact-metasomatic skarn deposit formed where Paleozoic granitic intrusions interacted with surrounding limestone beds, creating a rich zone of copper sulfides and secondary copper carbonates, including massive deposits of high-grade malachite hosted within soft clay matrices. Open-cut mining and shallow extraction at the site by indigenous peoples date back to the Bronze Age, but large-scale industrial quarrying and underground mining commenced under Russian administration around 1702 following its rediscovery. The mine served as the primary source of copper for the Polevskoy metallurgical works and produced legendary, massive malachite blocks used for architectural ornamentation in Russian palaces throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Heavy industrial exploitation peaked in the 1700s and 1800s, with primary copper ore reserves largely exhausted by the early twentieth century, leaving the site mostly inactive for traditional mining though it remains a landmark locality in mineralogical history.
