Tucson, Arizona, USAHilton mine is one of the iconic mineral localities in northern England because of its world-famous yellow Fluorite. The mine, situated in Scordale, Cumbria, England, worked mineralised veins and flats in the Melmerby Scar Limestone, underlying the Whin Sill, a major dolerite intrusion. A domed mound of glassy, lustrous cubic Fluorite crystals cover a matrix core of altered limestone and fine-grained Fluorite. The cubes range from about 0.5 to 1.8 cm on edge; all are reasonably transparent with many displaying gemmy zones of lemon to golden acidic-yellow and often included with sulphide fine-grains, probably Chalcopyrite. Crystals within an area of the centre of the specimen appear blackened due to the colour of the underlying matrix.
